Luia Corsini

Growing up between Rome and New York, two cities in which decorative flourish intertwines with simple geometry, inspired Luia to paint her first Grid: a structure of abstract color blocks stacked upon one another, evocative of the ancient brickwork one can find in Roman landmarks such as the Coliseum and the geometrical clean shapes of urban maps that define an modern industrial city such as New York.

Fascinated with geometry from a young age, it was only later, in New York, that she became acquainted with and inspired by the Color Field Painting movement and the ability of color to convey and trigger feelings and emotions, in particular by artists like Agnes Martin, Ad Reinhardt, Donald Judd, Frank Stella and Mark Rothko. One day in her studio, she stumbled upon creating a geometric sequence that felt in perfect harmony with her state of mind and the geometric sequence, “The Grid,” became her signature style through which to explore feelings and memory through color blocks. Luia embraces the words of art historian Rosalind Krauss, who in her seminal essay ‘Grids’ contents that “the grid functions to declare the modernity of modern art.” “By “discovering” the grid,” Krauss continues, “cubism, de Stijl, Mondrian, Malevich … landed in a place that was out of reach of everything that went before. Which is to say, they landed in the present, and everything else was declared to be the past.”

This artistic evolution is further enriched by Luia’s unique life experiences, living between Rome and New York, followed by moves to Barcelona and California, and residing in Mexico City since 2020. Luia has explored the paramount role that architecture and nature play not only in defining the aesthetics of a city but also in shaping the collective psyche of its citizens.

Luia graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She has had solo and group exhibitions at galleries and art fairs in Europe, across the US and Mexico, including at Lagos, Casa Pedregal, Museo de Arte Moderno, Museo Tamayo and Zona Maco.
